Laparoscopic hysterectomy is a method where uterus removal surgery can be done via tiny holes on the tummy. Dr. Riddhi Shah is an expert in the procedure whereabout she can remove even large uterus by this procedure. She commonly performs it, and patients can go home after 24 hours. Stitches used are dissolvable and patients can return to normal activities after discharge. The aftereffects of uterus removal on the body are negligible if ovaries are preserved.

Who are the patients who may need this operation

What To Expect When Having a Laparoscopic Hysterectomy?

You will need at least 1 night stay in the hospital, probably 2 nights.
You may have a urine catheter in the bladder for 12 to 24 hours after the operation.
The night prior to the operation you will be given some medication to empty the bowels, so you may experience diarrhoea to clear the gut contents. You need to remain fasted for minimum 6 hours prior to the scheduled operation, which means no water or food. If you are on some regular medication, you need to take it with small sips of water.
You may have 3 or 4 small cuts on the abdomen during the operation (less than a centimeter size)
You will have some waterproof stickers on the tummy which keeps the holes intact. All stitches are dissolvable and inside so not visible on the skin surface. Sometimes we use skin glue. The waterproof sticker dressings allow patient to shower immediately after the operation and the stickers are removed after 1 to 2 weeks post-operation.
About 6 hours after the operation you can start having clear fluids, after 12 hours you can have all fluids eg. soups. Solid food can be allowed the next day and you then resume your full diet without any restrictions.
Antibiotics through the veins are given for a day after which the line can be removed and you can have oral medications for 5 more days
You will be able to move around a day after the procedure with minimal discomfort.
You can resume all your daily activities at home after discharge without need for carers, you may also be fit for travel by road/rail or air, you can engage in gentle exercises not involving weight training
You will need to avoid unprotected intercourse, heavy weight lifting (>5kgs) and avoid constipation
