What To Do If Choosing To Birth Naturally?

Stay active throughout the pregnancy, not just the last month.
It’s important to be fit prior to planning pregnancy (Body mass index 18 to 24.5)
Ideal weight gain in pregnancy for normal individuals is 11-12 kgs. Being overweight can slow down labour progress, it can also lead to diabetes in pregnancy or baby being too large.
Read about labour and delivery process. This helps you anticipate and understand what to look out for. It also helps you not to panic when it happens.
Join prenatal classes/Lamaze/Yoga during pregnancy. It would be ideal if your birthing partner joins you for these.
Keep minimal number of people in your delivery suite. Ideally only your birthing partner. Multiple opinions leads to added pressure on you and lack of rest during early labour.
Membrane sweep- You may be offered a vaginal examination in your 9th month. This helps us assess if the baby would fit into the pelvis. It also helps us do a stretch and sweep of the neck of the womb with one finger. If the neck of the womb is closed, we can massage it during this vaginal examination. This helps start a hormonal reaction which can start labour in a few days.
Stay mobile during labour. In early labour, baby monitoring is done every couple of hours so in between those you can walk, do squats, bounce on a gym ball or use a swing.
Stay hydrated- Constantly be sipping fluids
Do not stress or panic- Trying to control the situation leads to release of stress hormone which slows down release of the delivery hormone
Feel relaxed and loved- The delivery hormone is same as the love hormone, so bring in your favourite romantic music, you can spend some time alone with your partner before the baby arrives. You can have your partner massage your back when you are having painful contractions.
Pain relief- Excessive pain can lead to stress. If you are unable to cope with painful contractions, especially in a long labour or in cases of induced labour, you can have a wide range of pain relief options ranging from warm water baths, TENS stimulation, pain medications, injectable pain killers, inhaling 50% laughing gas to an Epidural (a needle in the back through which painless delivery drug is constantly given)
